Yanagi Sushi
About This Spot
Stepping into Yanagi Sushi on bustling Kapiolani Boulevard, you’ll find yourself embraced by an intimate, unpretentious ambiance that invites quiet conversation and thoughtful moments. The space is modest and cozy, a refuge where the pace softens just enough to savor each element of the meal without rush. It’s the kind of place where familiar faces feel like old friends, and regulars carry with them stories that weave Yanagi into the fabric of their own family traditions.
Here, dining unfolds as a warmly personal experience, with attentive staff who check in gently throughout your meal, ensuring you’re comfortably settled and truly cared for. The atmosphere balances a respectful calmness with a subtle buzz — a gentle reminder that this beloved neighborhood spot has earned its place as a local staple over the years.
On the plate, the offerings lean confidently on craftsmanship and a deep respect for tradition. Freshness resonates through each bite, whether it’s a melt-in-your-mouth sashimi course or a thoughtfully prepared grilled butterfish. The menu reflects the rhythm of seasons and local ingredients, creating an experience that feels both grounded and inviting. Butterfish glazed with miso, flavorful tempura dishes, or a beautifully arranged chirashi bowl all whisper of quiet care and culinary patience rather than flashiness.
While those looking to gather a large group might find the seating limited, Yanagi makes up for space in genuine hospitality and a shared love of Japanese flavors. It’s a place where you can lean into the comfort of familiar tastes, the pleasure of fresh seafood, and the simple joy of a calm evening meal that unfolds at just the right pace.

They were constantly checking in on us to make sure we were doing alright and were taken care of. The food was delicious as well. The space is a bit on the small side; if you're thinking of bringing a party of more than 4, I would recommend calling ahead to see what accommodations can be made.

Our family has been coming here for multiple years, and my dad has been coming since he was a baby. One of the best Japanese restaurants in Hawaii. I highly recommend Yanagi to anyone that visits Honolulu. I love coming here and ordering my regular, a kids udon portion with a Shirley temple. I love how whenever I come here my dad has a new story to tell us from the times he was eating here at Yanagi. I absolutely love this place and come here at least once every time we visit. Our family definitely love coming here and eating all the delicious food they have here, we absolutely think you should come here and we hope you will love Yanagi as much as we do.

We had dinner with several friends here tonight. The private room was tight, but acceptable. The sashimis were very fresh, the butter fish was well prepared. The raw oysters were fresh as well and small as we’d ordered. All dishes were fairly traditional, but lacked creativity and proper presentation.

There's a reason this place won Honolulu's best of sushi award. The staff is freaking ridiculously amazing and the food is just sublime. Really the best sushi in all of Oahu.

Great happy hour after 9 p.m. Their salmon dish is popular for a reason. Their sashimi is decent. The only downside is that service can be slow at times.
